I never took Statistics in school. From what I've heard, I didn't miss much.
Tonight, however, I decided to satisfy an odd curiosity and ended up with some stats that were interesting. (To me--not necessarily to you.)
1) Number of books currently in my library: 369
2) Number of those books I've read: 153
3) Number of books I am missing: 15 (that I know of)
4) Number of books I've tossed: 6
5) Number of books currently on loan: 13
6) Number of books I've started but haven't finished: 15
I'm no statistician...but this data speaks to me. Do you want to know what it says? (Again, to me--not necessarily to you.)
a) I've spent a lot of money on books.
b) The Books Owned to Books Read ratio is rather pathetic.
c) I don't keep track of my investment(s) well enough.
d) I should probably borrow more books from the public library.
e) I'm glad I have friends/neighbors who share my love of literature.
f) I'm behind on a lot more than my house-cleaning.
Side Note: I have to clarify one tiny detail...because I have to. I do. It's a compulsion:
The data collected does not include church books, coffee table books, children's books, picture books, scriptures, manuals, how-to collections, or other such publications.

Do you have an e-reader? I just got one for Christmas and can I tell you how tempting it is to just buy buy buy? All those books right at your fingertips. And you can be reading them in less than five minutes. (Two if you have a really good internet connection.) You probably shouldn't get one. It looks as if you already have a small problem. ;) Oh, on the plus side, you can't lose books; unless you lose the e-reader. Then you're screwed.
I am currently working on a project to catalog all the books in our house. My next stop is the crawl space-not sure when I will get to that.
I totally relate...to all of it.
I did take statistics in college and I got a D and I worked SO hard for that D!
My bookshelf probably looks similar to yours although I have read at least 80% of them. And now that I work at Seagull Book, I don't buy them anymore-don't have to. My advice? Go get a job at a bookstore, even if it's only for a few hours a week like mine.
Oh...I had a part-time job at a bookstore once.
At the end of the 1st year I compared my total $ spent at the bookstore to my W2 for the year. I think I made about $150.
Not a good idea.
nerd :) but I love ya!
I love books!!! I just wish I had a floor to ceiling bookcase in our den to put them on. Not that I could fill that up yet, but it would be fun to try.
