Poor Parenting Moment No. 583

Well, here we are: smack-dab back in the middle-of-the-night-wakings of a baby boy. And, once again, I'm tired. Very tired. Memory-erasing, barely-functioning tired. But, never one for the "tough love" approach, I continue to encourage late night/early morning encounters with my sweet boy by consistently providing cuddles, bottles, blankies, and all manner of mothering.

The other night seemed as good a time as any to return to our previously-successful method of letting him cry it out. His first screams came about 2 hours after his bedtime. I let him go for a few minutes but eventually hustled up to his room to be a mom. Ian caught me right before opening the door. I proceeded to give him all types of excuses on why I should just go check it out...but, being the stronger of the two of us, he convinced me to let him work it out. He cried for about another half hour and then we heard silence. Wahoo!

Or not.

Two hours later we were treated to an amplified version of his earlier wails. Ian, no longer the "bad cop" got up to check things out only to find that he had a VERY messy diaper that had obviously been around for a while and had now become a VERY painful rash. Aw, crap!

So here's what we've been experiencing the last couple days:

How easy do you think I'm going to fall for the "let him cry it out" approach now?

Not so much.

Wow, you're only at 538? I lost track somewhere in the thousands...

ahhh, he's still so darn cute! We just got over the bad rash too. I love A&D ointment, great stuff.

I was going to say something very similar to Emily. I'd say you're doing fine if you're only at 538.

This story reminds me of my dear sister-in-law. When her oldest--now 9--was an infant, they were living in an non-air-conditioned apartment. They too were the kind of tired you described and were desperately trying to teach their baby to cry it out. Unfortunately, the parents fell asleep before Baby did and the loud fans they were using to cool their sauna-like apartment masked the noise of the infant's cry. They awoke to police officers holding flashlights in their faces and yelling at them to get out of bed. The neighbor heard the crying child and called the cops.

There are, of course, lots more details to the story but diaper rash doesn't seem too bad anymore, does it?

Funny thing is that I was going to put "No. 5,893" or something like that, but didn't want to exaggerate too much. :)

Oh man, that just makes you feel so bad! Hang in there and try the crying it out again another time.

Is he teething? Avery gets raw butt all the time when she teeths. I talked to the dr. about these sleepless nights and he said to give her Benedryl and Ibuprofen at night and they should sleep. Try it, it has been a life saver for us.

That has happened to me before. So, you are not the only one. In fact, I have talked to many moms who have had similar stories to tell. Just for comfort. And I have always had nightmares of someone calling the cops because they hear a baby crying. Especially when Lando was a babe. Thanks, Tara!
